What To Expect

La Fortuna de San Carlos
The sloth is one of the most emblematic animals of Costa Rican fauna. These small and friendly creatures are sweet, beautiful, and always appear happy, with an eternal smile painted on their faces.
We would love for you to join us for a short hike through the secondary rainforest to try to locate them. This trail is only 2 km. (1.25 miles) and is designed with the entire family in mind. It is very common to spot these small mammals hiding among the vegetation. But our expert guides know all their secrets and tricks! We will also learn interesting facts about some of the fabulous plants we spot along the way.
Due to its location and type of flora, this trail is also heavily populated with birds. To complement a morning or afternoon full of wildlife, we will be able to appreciate many species of birds in the area. Recommended only for sloth and bird lovers!

Great nature tour!

From the moment he picked us up, our guide JP was warm, friendly and welcoming. His knowledge of the the area, the wildlife, and culture was extraordinary. He remained determined throughout the entire tour to find as many animals - sloths, birds, reptiles, and event ants - and teach us as much as possible about them. This was one of the most memorable and rewarding experiences of our trip. Highly recommended!
Highly reccomend!

Our guide Norman was fantastic! I am so glad we opted for a guided tour or we likely would have never seen the sloths. We saw two sloths during our tour and so much other wildlife! He brought a scope with him which helped a lot and pointed out all sorts of vegetation, birds, frogs, and other creatures. We did a few tours with Jacamar and all of them were professional, friendly, full of knowledge and punctual.
Excellent tour

Julio "Iglesias" Mendez was the perfect guide. Halfway to our destination trail, Julio pulled over as he saw a sloth and her baby in a tree clear as day, so we pulled out the telescope, took pictures and all had a good cry all before we even got to the beginning of our adventure. The park trail was very nicely laid out with what seemed to be different arboreal moments throughout. The trails are all basically the same, with your ability to see 1 or 10 sloths along the way effectively subject to chance. I think the real quality in this trip was Julio, himself. He knows his Costa Rican wildlife. Top down and bottom up. He seems to be the kid that grew up playing with all of this these animals while skipping grade school in addition to being academically trained in the flora and fauna of Costa Rica. The slothless moments of the hike were filled with Julio calling out to and listening for various birds, frogs, etc. And it paid off, we found a green and black poison arrow frog under a log just off the beaten path that he found with his ears. There was ample animal-watching and subsequent conversation about the smallest of details regarding each bird, owl, squirrel, sloth and vulture whose path we were fortunate to cross. Highly recommend this outfit!
Guided tour the way to go!

Amazing guide! Knowledgeable, friendly, and great personality. He knew what and who to look for on this tour. By merely paying a fee and touring on own, you will not see the amazing birds, sloths and animals with near the frequency. Get a guide for this tour: the best way to see the sloths in their own habitat.
